This is our qualitative inquiry blog. We will use this blog as an instructional tool to explore qualitative inquiry. Qualitative research is about the process and it's about the journey. Let's begin!
Ethical Concerns of doing qualitative research Deception is one thing to consider. You do not want to deceive the participants who are in the study. Power is also very important to consider. The power dynamic could skew the data depending on the situation. Additionally, respecting the privacy of participants is important. It can be difficult to navigate the atmosphere of trying to respect privacy and confidentiality if the study is not carefully considered. It can also be hard not to side with the participants. For example, with ethnography, you could become involved in the community and that line could be blurred. You become part of that community therefore you become part of the data.
Researchers need to be careful about not falsifying data. If researcher is working on a dissertation and you have an approaching deadline, you may try to rush through it. The interpretation of data can be different depending on the method of review. For example, you may have different interpretations if you read a transcript versus listening to it when you can hear inflection.
Another issue is making sure the study is carefully considered prior to approval. The IRB is there to protect the people involved and the institution. Not fully disclosing your complete study to the IRB because you want to get it approved, would be unethical. These are a few ethical issues with qualitative research.
